5 Must-Have Medical Apps for Doctors and other Medical Professionals

In today’s digital age, there’s an app for everything you do. In fact, many professional industries are beginning to rely heavily on apps, whether it’s social media or other helpful tools. Now, the medical sector joined the party, and many high-rated medical apps are listed on the Play Store and App Store. Whether you’re a nurse, doctor, physician’s assistant, or surgeon, there is an app — in fact, there are several — that can help you become a better medical professional.

In general, the benefits of using smartphone applications for doctors and other medical professionals comes down to three essential points:

  • Efficiency

In the medical field, time is everything — especially for physicians. With more patients knocking on your doorstep each day, the amount of time you spend caring for them keeps dwindling. The average doctor’s visit is now down to about 20 minutes (average), and it could keep decreasing. So, how do you work faster while still providing a high standard of care? How do you fit all the requirements of your job into your day without making mistakes? Incorporating the use of medical applications into your daily routine can help you make the best use of your time during patient visits.

  • Accuracy

Of course, accuracy is always of great concern to a physician. Every doctor wants to know how accurate the reading is. With mobile applications, doctors and nurses can eliminate confusing paper trails and keep patient records in an electronic, easy-to-understand format. This can decrease inaccurate diagnoses, reduce prescription errors, and eliminate many other confusing scenarios. Accuracy also allows doctors to avoid medical malpractice lawsuits, which is always desirable.

  • Convenience

The advantage that essentially offers importance to the previous two listed is convenience. Not only do medical professionals now have tools to help them be more accurate and efficient, but they are available right at their fingertips. No longer do they have to travel, search through huge textbooks or run back and forth from patients to computers to access data. Perhaps the greatest benefit to mobile apps is that they’re available for any medical professional with a smartphone — whether it’s personal or provided by the hospital — and they’re incredibly simple to use.

With these three factors in consideration, we put together this list of the most high informative and effective medical apps for doctors to help you offer the best care possible.

BNF

So the first app that I have on my list is probably the most important one and it is called BNF. It is basically the whole BNF in an app, and for those guys who don’t know, “BNF” stands for the British National Formulary. It is a formulary of all the drugs that are used in the UK. This medical app tells you the dose of the drugs to use, the indication, and also the side effects. It also tells you which drugs are licensed and which drugs and medicines are unlicensed. It does tell you the cost of the drug as well, so if you are trying to prescribe the drug to your patients, you will know which brand is the most cost-effective.

Renal Drug Handbook

The next one is not really an application. Though it is definitely very essential, it is the Renal Drug Handbook. The one I use is by St. George’s University. But essentially, you need to get a Renal Drug Handbook so that you’ll be able to know what type of doses that you can prescribe to patients. It tells you the doses for each drug based on their renal function, and it also tells you what the safe dose and the frequency are. It also tells if there are any renal replacement therapy available as well.

MicroGuide

The third app on my list is MicroGuide. MicroGuide is basically an app that will give you all the information you need and the guidelines for treating infections. Most hospitals use MicroGuides, so you can change the guidelines depending on which hospitals you are working in, which is definitely useful, especially if your local doctor or if you move around different trusts.

Toxbase

The next app we’ll talk about is Toxbase. Toxbase is essentially a database where you can find information on all types of poisoning. It is run by the National Poisons Information Service, which is essentially a branch of Public Health England; they also have a 24-hour call service, so if you come across a substance that is not in your database or if you need more information on a particular substance, you can give them a ring, and they will try their best to get back to you. They will give you more information that you need.

MDCalc

The final app that I have is MDCalc. MDCalc is basically an app where you can calculate the score for your patients. It has various scoring systems that you will need for medicine. The ABCD score for TIS Stroke, the CHADS-VAS score, the hispid score, and the gray score for myocardial infarction. It also has a way to calculate the P and the DBT scores as well. Using a scoring system is very important in medicine, especially in the UK. This can make a difference whether the patients get admitted to the hospital or whether they are safe to be discharged home.

Conclusion

We hope you’ll take advantage of the information to offer the best care possible and become more efficient and accurate while also avoiding malpractice suits. Also, if you have any apps that you think will be useful for doctors and other medical practitioners, please leave them in the comments down below. Please share this blog with your medical friends and connections if you liked it.
